Our Roots: Engineering Brass Innovation in Hamamatsu

BEST BRASS was founded in 1999 in Hamamatsu, Japan—a global center for musical instrument engineering and innovation.
Our founder, Shinji Hamanaga, poured his soul and vast expertise into the brand after a distinguished career as a designer at Yamaha beginning in 1982, where he spent nearly two decades mastering the acoustic design of brass instruments. Over the years, a singular, powerful ambition took root within him: "To craft the world’s finest brass instruments." This unwavering passion became the very heartbeat of the BEST BRASS brand.

A Legacy of Innovation

For over 17 years at Yamaha, starting in 1982, Shinji Hamanaga stood at the forefront of brass instrument development. During his tenure, he brought more than 70 products to the world and secured 17 patents.His revolutionary brass designs were embraced by legendary orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic—marking what many recognize as the "Golden Era" of Yamaha brass. His inventions, led by the Dual Plane Valve and the Full Quattro Horn, with the Silent Brass system at the crown, brought wonder and joy to countless performers, forever changing the landscape of brass music.

The Dawn of BEST BRASS: A Global Impact

BEST BRASS gained global acclaim by revolutionizing the concept of practice mutes. The "Warm-up" mute—an ultra-compact, high-performance masterpiece—and the "e-Sax"—the world’s first full-scale saxophone silencer—shattered industry conventions upon their release. These were more than just new products; they were engineering solutions that empowered musicians to practice anywhere and anytime, effectively removing the barriers to musical creativity for artists around the globe.
